Message from the Head of Department

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) will change how we believe and work. 4IR is the interconnection between the physical, digital, and biological world, which is a fusion of advances in Big Data, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, and other technologies. Critical thinking, creativity, complex problem solving, and emotional intelligence are the key requirements to prepare the skilled workforce to face the challenges of the 4IR.

Keep in mind these requirements, Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) focuses on outcome-based education through active teaching-learning methods, project-based learning, complex engineering problem solving, industry-academia collaborative research works, etc. that empower the students to find solutions on their own, enhance communication skills and ensure life long learning. The excellence of the department lies with the quality faculty members whose continuous striving for excellence is the key to growing success..

Besides the academic curricular activities, the Department of CSE at ULAB engages students in several co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including participating in and organizing International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), National Collegiate Programming Contest (NCPC), Hack-a-Thons, International Conferences, etc. that stimulate their innovative thinking, improve social and ethical views, develop inter-personal skills and leadership. The department is empowered by several clubs including ULAB Computer and Programming Society (UCPS), IEEE ULAB Student Branch, IEEE ULAB Computer Society, and IEEE UAB Women in Affinity group.

Over the years the CSE department has grown with proud Alumni serving top companies at home and abroad. Many graduates are pursuing higher studies abroad and serving as faculty members. We are proud of our graduates for their continued accomplishments. The graduates are embarking on the high-yield landscapes of digital transformation.

I welcome you all to the Department of CSE to explore the opportunities and embrace the challenge of being part of this journey of excellence.

  • About CSE

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering strives for graduating highly competent students with the potential of becoming the leaders in their field and also to impart knowledge which allows them to understand the implications of their work on both to themselves as well to the society as a whole.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering at ULAB, since its inception, has been offering an undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering with focus on developing skills for ICT industries worldwide. The designed program provides students with fundamental skills needed to become an accomplished IT specialist. The program also aims at a wider knowledge of the subject, rather than a mere understanding of the existing commercial approaches. The degree is designed for a wide range of students, including those who wish to pursue a career in software engineering, computer programming or related areas, and also those who wish to move on to study for higher degrees in the computing and information technology areas, either at home or abroad.

The department believes in a philosophy of Active Learning which is reflected in our curriculum and teaching styles. The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) curriculum has been designed with both theoretical and industry oriented courses. The department provides state of the art laboratory facilities, with guidance from the top notch faculties, to bring out the best from the students. Departmental active collaboration with local and international reputed companies is keeping both CSE students and faculty updated with industry innovations and requirements. In their last academic year, students will be able to choose a concentration area or any other elective courses to focus their career according to their interest. Furthermore, the Liberal Arts curricular framework will help the students to acquire an openness of vision to become adaptable and ever-effective professionals of this century and for the time to come. The program objectives address our goal of graduating highly competent students with a potential of becoming leaders in their careers and add value to the society.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering at ULAB, since its inception, has been offering the undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering with more focus on the ICT industries worldwide. The designed program delivers the fundamental skills needed to become a Computer Scientist. The program also aims to a wider knowledge of the subject, rather than just an understanding of existing commercial approaches, so that the student’s understanding and knowledge can adapt and evolve to match the skills that will be required in the coming century. The degree is designed for a wide range of students, including those who wish to pursue a career in software engineering or computer programming or related areas, based on strong technical competence in software system design and interfacing, and also those who wish to move on to study for higher degrees in the computing and information technology areas either at home or abroad. The department is well accepted by different professional bodies through participation in different activities related to ICT. I found that ULAB was one step ahead. Not only the teachers from my department (Computer Science & Engineering) but also from the other departments were very helpful. They worked to make the classes interesting and interactive as well. Moreover, their doors were always open for the students’ welfare.

“The library of ULAB had been one of the greatest resources for us. It was well arranged and had a rich collection of books. Apart from academic books, there were story books, biographies, books on poems, CDs etc both in Bangla and English. The students could also access to a section of the library for listening audios as a part of their courses.

“Being a student of CSE, I have spent most of the time in the computer labs. All had adequate number of up-to-date PCs. There were also labs dedicated to students for programming and software development. Wi-Fi connections were available all over campus.

“ULAB always emphasized extra-curricular activities. I was a member of ULAB Computer Programming Club. We practiced programming under a professional trainer. The club also facilitated the students interested in contests like national programming and cyber gaming contests.

“Our admin were very supportive and almost always had solution to our difficulties. They were always very active in working in due time. What I found good in ULAB is, in spite of being a big university, it continues to be well disciplined and maintain a congenial environment for both students and faculty members.

ULAB was a golden period of my life. I had the opportunity to meet great faculty members, use state-of-the-art lab facilities, enjoy excellent educational resources and also participate in diverse co-curricular activities. The well-structured GED courses and the chances to take minor or optional courses from other departments truly reflect the notion that ULAB is ‘liberal’. I had the chance to participate in many events which helped shape me as a professional, and also improved my interpersonal and communication skills. In the end, I would like to say that I owe a lot to ULAB and I always recommend it.

Nowadays as I am working in a multicultural environment – where I need to make critical decisions, manage people with different mindsets, achieve goals within the allocated time and resources, and plan for the future – I often ask myself what was the triggering agent that drives and guides me to be a ‘professional’ of this global world. Although there are multiple answers, I would always put ULAB at the top of the list, because of the solid foundation I received during my time there. I would consider ULAB as a complete package for its students, with ingredients from academic learning along with the blend of Liberal Arts, the excellent culture of learning and innovation and of course the co-curricular activities. As ULAB CSE has equipped me with all the necessary instruments, now it’s my turn to fly to my limits and identify my destiny.
